CARLOTTA rectangular planting frame / raised bed | Corten

Square and rectangular planting frames from the "Palatino" series: "CARLOTTA" - made of Corten steel in various designs; its characteristic rust-red patina makes it versatile as an edging system or as a raised frame. Particularly recommended as a border for flower beds, it blends well into the garden without overly fragmenting it and offers additional protection against slugs and snails, as these avoid both the rough surface and the material itself. CARLOTTA is manufactured in the same way as CLARA, NORA and LOTTA, but without a base, instead with reinforcing angles for the corners. Modular - combine, for example, a frame in "rusted metal" look with a CLARA model bucket in anthracite. Corten steel is extremely durable and, thanks to its brown base tone, can be used discreetly – both in ornamental gardens and in well-maintained cottage gardens dominated by edible plants. CARLOTTA can be disassembled with just a few screws for reuse next year or in a different location. However, due to its material properties, there is absolutely no reason why it cannot be left in place over the winter; it is extremely weather-resistant. As planting frames: Can be used without soil to increase soil volume by 25 cm or for garden structuring, reinforcement angle. As a stacking frame: Simply screw it onto our Nora and Clara planters – this duo becomes a unit with even more possibilities. The base supplied with the planter can be placed either in the lower element or the upper one – so there's no need to fill it completely with soil! Versatile for indoor and outdoor use. The extension frame makes it possible to increase the height of a 50 cm high bucket to 75 or 100 cm. Take note of the combination possibilities of our materials - a unique concept from the company GEIGER. Production takes place on modern CNC machines with optimal dimensional accuracy. No comparison to cheap imports from the Far East. We are committed to our German production site and handle all manufacturing in-house. That's our quality promise! Pflanzrahmen / Rahmenbeete

High-quality planting frames and raised beds for discerning gardens

Modern garden design has undergone a paradigm shift. The garden is no longer seen merely as a growing area, but as an extension of the living space that demands structure, support, and aesthetic guidance. In this context, planting frames made of high-quality metal are far more than simple boundaries for soil. They function as the architectural cornerstones of a well-conceived outdoor space. They create clean lines, define spaces, and promote the growth of the plants within.

Those who opt for raised beds today consciously choose the contrast between vibrant greenery and durable material to create visual interest that lasts all year round, even in winter when many plants are dormant. The fascination of these design elements lies in their simplicity. There are no playful flourishes to distract from the essential; instead, pure form and the tactile quality of the material dominate. Whether as a classic vegetable bed, as an edging for a solitary tree, in a themed garden, or as a structuring element in a large gravel area:

A planting frame brings order to the diversity of plants and provides them with an additional 25 cm of planting substrate. It literally elevates the plants onto a pedestal and draws the viewer's eye. Choosing the right frame isn't about fleeting trends, but rather an investment in the garden's longevity. We're talking about objects that will last.

  • Active protection against corrosion

The developing patina of noble rust is not a decomposition, but a protective barrier layer that protects the material from rapid rusting through.

  • Natural snail protection

The rough, dry surface of Corten steel is avoided by mollusks because it attacks the animals' mucus layer – a chemical-free protection for your salad.

  • Thermal buffer capacity

The metal stores the heat of the day and releases it into the soil at night, which promotes root growth in spring and autumn.

  • Easy to care for in the long term

Neither the galvanized steel sheet nor the Corten steel ever needs to be painted, oiled or impregnated, making it easy to maintain in the long run.

Corten steel: The living patina as a protective shield

Corten steel is the dominant material in contemporary landscape architecture. This alloy (weathering steel) possesses the unique ability to protect itself. When the planting frame arrives, it still displays the mill-finished, gray surface of the raw steel. As soon as it is exposed to the elements, a fascinating chemical process begins. A protective layer of sulfates and phosphates forms, making each frame unique. The color varies depending on the weather and exposure, ranging from warm orange and deep red to rich brown. These earthy tones create the perfect complementary contrast to the fresh green of the leaves.

Anthracite and galvanized steel: Cool elegance for minimalist concepts

Not every garden calls for the rustic warmth of weathered steel. For modern, architecturally structured outdoor spaces, we offer planting frames made of galvanized sheet steel. These are additionally powder-coated, for example in anthracite. These options exude tranquility and sophistication, recede visually, and allow the plants to take center stage. Technically speaking, the combination of galvanizing and coating provides double protection against environmental influences. Anthracite-colored frames are particularly well-suited for formal gardens or roof terraces where clean, almost graphic lines are desired.

Planting frame with modular system and stable construction

A planting frame must withstand enormous forces. Wet soil is heavy, and in winter, the freezing earth expands and exerts significant pressure against the side walls. Many simple products from the hardware store succumb to this pressure after just a few winters and bulge. Our Carlotta raised beds from the PALATINO series are structurally designed to withstand these stresses. The edging and connection techniques used are crucial in this regard.

Reinforcement angle and edging of the planting frames

To ensure lasting dimensional stability, we use intelligent reinforcing angles in the corners. These guarantee the permanent right angles of every frame. Furthermore, the top edges of our frames are folded multiple times. This is not only for aesthetic reasons (it makes the walls appear more robust), but primarily serves to stiffen the entire component. Another, often underestimated advantage of this folding is safety. There are no sharp burrs that could cause injury while gardening. This smooth, tactile quality distinguishes handcrafted products from simple sheet metal blanks. Here, our decades of experience in structural folding technology truly pay off.

The modular system in the garden

Not every garden calls for the rustic warmth of weathered steel. For modern, architecturally structured outdoor spaces, we offer planting frames made of galvanized sheet steel. Anthracite-colored frames are particularly well-suited for formal gardens or roof terraces where clean, almost graphic lines are desired.

Planting frame without base

Our planting frames are supplied without a base as standard. For the ambitious gardener, this is not a drawback, but a crucial functional advantage. The direct connection to the topsoil allows for a natural exchange that cannot occur in closed containers. This open design offers three key agroecological benefits:

  • Capillary action : Plants can draw moisture from deeper soil layers during dry periods. This significantly reduces watering needs in the height of summer and makes your crops more resistant to heat waves.
  • Prevention of waterlogging : Excess rainwater can seep away unhindered. Unlike with closed containers, no "swamp" forms at the bottom, which could lead to root rot.
  • Access for soil organisms: This is crucial for organic farming. Earthworms and beneficial microorganisms can freely migrate into the raised bed. They loosen the soil, decompose organic material, and provide valuable nutrients.
A planting frame is therefore not an isolated container, but an integral part of your garden's soil ecosystem. It focuses biological activity precisely where your plants need it.

Planning guide: How to choose the right size and shape for your new planting frame

Before choosing a model, you should analyze the sight lines in your garden and define its intended use. A raised bed for tomatoes has different depth and width requirements than a decorative element in the front garden. To make your selection easier, we have compared the most common sizes and their ideal applications.

From edible garden to privacy screen

The uses for planting frames are as varied as our customers' gardens. We observe that the search intent is often driven by a specific need to solve a problem. Square formats (e.g., 50x50 cm to 100x100 cm) are particularly well-suited for dividing vegetable gardens.

Instead of vast, difficult-to-cultivate fields, raised beds allow you to create small, manageable units. This simplifies crop rotation and maintenance. You can tailor the soil in each frame to the specific needs of the crop; sandy and lean for Mediterranean herbs in one frame, humus-rich and nutrient-rich for tomatoes in another.

Urban oases and vertical greenery

Space is at a premium in urban areas. This is where innovative solutions like the "URBAN Nexus" come into play, bringing vertical greenery to the "urban jungle." Planting frames help simulate garden spaces on paved surfaces such as courtyards or large balconies. Thanks to their clean geometry, even small areas don't appear cluttered, but rather uncluttered. Combined with an optional base, the frame becomes a flexible raised bed that can easily be moved when relocating.

Planting and care tips for your new frame

Once the frame is assembled, it's time to fill it. We recommend a layered construction, similar to a classic raised bed, even though the frame is lower.

  1. Drainage : At the very bottom, coarse green waste or branches (if the frame is directly on the ground) or a layer of expanded clay (when used with a base plate).
  2. Substrate : This is followed by a mixture of good garden soil and compost.
  3. Detailed planning : The top layer should consist of high-quality potting soil.

The frame itself requires very little maintenance. With Corten steel, you should simply ensure that no rust drips onto sensitive patio stones during the initial phase. Once the patina has formed, this process largely stops. For coated frames, occasional wiping with a damp cloth is sufficient to remove dust or pollen.

Buy plant frames: Opt for the flexible Palatino & Carlotta system

When you buy a planting frame from us, you're not choosing an isolated piece of metal, but rather the entry point into a well-designed modular system. Our collection, especially the palatino and CARLOTTA series, is designed to ensure technical compatibility for years to come. This means that when you buy, you're purchasing an open frame for direct contact with the ground, but you retain the option to later upgrade it with our separately available bases or use it as a perfectly fitting attachment for our CLARA, LOTTE, and NORA planters. You're not buying a static product, but an adaptable building block for your garden design.

Choosing the right model is primarily a question of the desired aesthetic effect and the location. The Corten steel versions, with their vibrant patina, develop a unique dynamic that visually softens harsh edges in the garden and blends organically into natural design concepts. Those seeking a clean, unchanging line for modern patios, on the other hand, should opt for the galvanized and powder-coated models in anthracite.

Both lines come standard with the necessary reinforcing angles to permanently withstand earth pressure. This detail sets our frames apart from simple folded products. Choose your dimensions now, from a compact 50x50 cm for the "Urban Nexus" to a spacious 150x150 cm, and invest in genuine material substance.
